PRESIDENT'S CHAT
We are now well into another calendar year. I will
resist saying time flies when you are enjoying yourself!
Goodness I have said it! The Burns Supper has come and
gone and I thank all that contributed and attended this
enjoyable evening. Onwards! We are entering a busy time
in our Rotary Calendar with our Open Evening, the
Sightsavers Social Evening and the President's
Dinner. I appreciate that this, along with other Club
activities, may at times seem a lot to deal with.
Our President in another guise increasing the height
of the Well. Ask for a quotation!
There are many aspects to the life of a successful
Rotary Club. However these aspects of success are rooted
in the enthusiasm and participation of all of the Members
and I am most grateful for this support. Please continue
to help make the above events a success. I can assure you
that feet will be tapping to the Rancho Rebop and the
Full Moon Howlers and the Dave Amos Trio. Bring your
friends - it's not an evening to be missed!
Best wishes,
(P.S. Wishing Well now under modification!!)
Kind Regards,
President John
Editorial
All the experts say "Don't try out a new
camera on something important". They are right!
My new camera phone a pre-Christmas present worked
but the flash wasn't strong enough for a big
room. So apologies for the quality of the Christmas
Dinner pictures. Still it didn't spoil the night.
A great evening with talented musicians, good food and
wine and even the odd raffle prize.

An ODD raffle prize - guess who?
The Burns Supper
Traditional it was but dull it wasn't. This year's Burns Supper was excellent.
Piper Ian led in the Haggis,
President John addressed it eloquently and with feeling. The Immortal
Memory proposed by Roger Quick embraced Burns but also the wider
aspects of Burns' philosophy and Kevin Fearn toasted the lassies literally. Julia,
maintaining her composure, responded with dignity.
Donald in his inimitable way, added light-hearted, poetic entertainment. If you missed it you missed a very enjoyable, entertaining evening!
News Items
The "Socks for
Skinnergate" project was completed with the handing over of the
said socks by Harry in time for Christmas. Harry
has a new camera phone and was able to send the
picture to me direct! Not bad eh! Watch out for
the video!!
On Saturday 19th January, around 130
Rotarians and friends attended the Inner Wheel Club
of Perth Moncrieffe presentation of "An Evening
at the West End" - a charity concert in aid of
Rachel House Hospice. This was a debut concert of
Ross Martin (aged 17) son of the the Inner Wheel Club
President Anna Martin. Ross was accompanied by
Michael Ellacott on keyboard. The venue was St
Matthew's Church Hall.
Ross is currently a 6th year student at Perth Academy
and a young Leader in the 10th Perthshire Scouts.
Ross has been training under the expert tutelage of
Michael for the last 2 years and his credits include
Marius in Les Miserable & Don in Summer Holiday,
both productions of Tread the Boards YMT, in Dundee.
Ross was part of the "Cast" which
entertained at the World Scout Jamboree in July 2007
performing daily before audiences of 20,000. He also
performed with the "Cast" at the O2 Dome in
November 2007 as part of the 100th Year celebration
of Scouting. This was his first solo performance.
The PK'ers!
A Toast to a successful evening?
All three Perth Rotary Clubs as well as the Inner
Wheel of Perth were represented on the evening and as
can be seen from the photoshots Kinnoull members were
in good form. We met an ex-Club member, namely John
Broadfoot formerly of Strathallan School and he extends
greetings to us all.
The Jolly Janitor(s)!
In typical fashion we helped the ladies tidy up at
the end of the Concert before we retired to the Royal
George Hotel for some refreshments. However, a small
bird told me that the President of the Inner Wheel
Club remarked to Peter MacDougal at the end of the
tidying up process that "it was alright for him
to close up the hall" as she thought he was the
"JANITOR/CARETAKER"!!!
Congratulations all round to the performers and the
Inner Wheel of Perth Moncrieffe for their sterling
efforts on the night. We look forward to hearing how
much was raised for Rachel House Hospice.
Convenors Reports
SPORTS EXTRA. ( Read all About it ) January 2008
Edition. FROM SPORTS CONVENOR. GEORGE DELGATY.
USA COUPLES GOLF EXCHANGE 2008.
I have to report that Ann and I will be hosting a
Golfing Rotarian and his wife from Western
Pennsylvania from 12th to 17th July as I have heard
from the Central area Co-0rdinator , Bill Martin of
the Kirriemuir Rotary Club. He knows that there are 6
couples coming with possibly another 2, as the normal
number is 8 for the Golf Exchange. Therefore there
may still be a couple of Scottish hosts still
required, let me know if you are interested. In the
long run, you to could be golfing, partying,
sightseeing in the good ol US of A in a few years
time. The other Members of our Group in the Central
Area of District 1010 are the Co-ordinator, Bill
Martin and his wife Frances of Kirriemuir Rotary, Jim
and Pat Strathearn also of Kirriemuir Rotary,Alan and
Mary Cunningham of Montrose Rotary and Jim and
Margaret Wilson and Ian and Liz Rattray both of
Pitlochry Rotary. A Meeting in March is to be
arranged to work out details of our Programme for our
incoming Guests. This is just another example of the
Fellowship and Fun part of Rotary International.
GOLF.
Still briefly on Golf . I announced at the last
Business Meeting that I had received Booking details
of the 54th Rotary International Golf Tournament at
St. Andrews from Sunday 8th June 2008 until Thursday
12th June. The Competition is in Stableford Format
over the OLD COURSE and EDEN COURSE. There is also an
International Team Competition played over the New
and Jubilee Courses with the Final Round over the Old
Course. But to represent your Country you have to do
well in the First 2 Qualifying Rounds. As the St.
Andrews publicity states, it is getting harder and
harder to obtain tee times on the OLD COURSE. It
appears to be that Fellowship within Rotarians is the
main ingredient of the week. I have details for
anyone that is interested. IF YOU ARE A GOLFER YOU
MUST PLAY THE OLD COURSE AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR
LIFETIME. I think many a Golfer has this thought in
his mind, so here is your chance if you harbour these
thoughts.
CURLING.
The Results so far in the Perthshire Rotary Club
league are as follows :-
Our re-arranged game against Alloa was played on 20th
December but we lost that one 4-9 but have recently
beat Pitlochry 12-1Tuesday 15th January, prior to our
Final Game in the Ramshead where we beat Perth to go
through from our Area Qualifying to the Ramshead
Finals which will be held at Dewars on Tuesdays 4th
and 11th March. So well done to the Rink of Colin
(Skip), George, Kevin and Willie.
At this moment it looks like that Colin Moreland,
George Delgaty, Ian Stevenson and Ann Delgaty and
Myra Stevenson plus one other Curler from one of the
other Perth Rotary Clubs will be winging our way over
the POND to attend the Friendship part of the 2008
Rotary World Curling Championships which are being
held in Brantford, Ontario from Sunday 30th March to
Friday 4th April. Final arrangements are being made
and I should be able to report on our Programme of
Events nearer the time.
Ways and Means Committee ... From Eva
Now the ways and means committee are busy with the
preparations for the President's Dinner and the
forthcoming performance of the Black Dyke Band. We
would like to ask all Rotarians to think about
auction and raffle prizes for the President's
Dinner. If you know someone who does or owns
something that may be of interest, please discuss it
with Douglas Barr or myself. It could be a holiday
home in the Bahamas (!) or a VIP pass for a day at
the races. Something oozing with value. The committee
members will also come around to ask you to contact
your contacts for raffle prizes.
Re the Black Dyke band, don't forget that you
have to buy your own tickets, which are now available
from the box office at the concert hall. Don't
leave it too late, as the tickets are going quickly.
Youth and Vocation Report from John Dickson
Programme priorities at present are:
-
Strathallan Interviews. We are
looking for 8 Volunteers for each of 2 nights and
Nick Du Boulay has suggested any 2 nights from
possible dates 25th and 27th Feb and 5th, 10th and
12th March. JD will circulate sheet by email and
would be grateful if all volunteers will put names
down asap
-
Music Awards Sponsorship --- John
Dickson met with Pete Honeyman Senior Lecturer in
Music at Perth College( and partner of our own
Helen MacDonald ) to discuss ideas. Pete has
suggested us sponsoring a vocal competition with
Students submitting their recordings. Approx 5
finalists would be chosen and invited to perform at
a rotary gathering around June.
