It didn't seem appropriate to ask our president to write a message this month. Needless to say, I am sure that you would all want to wish him and his family strength in what must be a difficult time.

The President's Dinner

President John with Guests

President John and Guests

Friday March 14th, a night to remember! The "George" was well packed as some 110 Rotarians and guests get together to raise funds for deserving causes. President John was in good form, welcoming the guests, introducing the top table and setting the scene for the evening.
Thanks to the hard work of Douglas Barr and friends the auction attracted active bidding. A biplane ride, a day of trout fishing and a two night trip to the Borders with salmon fishing were some of the items on offer. The raffle too, thanks to Eva and team was well supported. The after-dinner speakers were interesting, even if a bit predictable, but the ambiance was good and another good night was had by all!

The Black Dyke Band

band
Black Dyke Band
Childhood memories of thumping, boring, out of tune, brass band music were dispelled in an instant on Saturday March 29th. The Black Dyke Band were in town! What a performance. The sound that they extracted from brass tubes ranged from the soft to the ear bending; from the subtle to the harsh magnificance that only a full brass band can muster; and all leaving you wanting to hear more. Three encores at least were demanded and given. The programme was varied suiting all tastes but, for one listener at least, the pavanes and gavottes of the Elizabethen Court were the most memorable. The simplicity of the rythm and the tunes blended perfectly with the crisp acoustics of the brass.

A very successful evening, raising some £8000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Congratulations to Harry and his "brass collecting" band of organisers.

Saturday april 5th, -- A recipe for.....

Removing bushes

Finished!

  • Take one banker, one chemist, one surveyor, one farmer, one engineer and a 10m by 5m garden in need of some attention.
  • Put them under the watchful eye of a psychiatric nurse.
  • Remove existing weeds; none of the workers, that's for sure!
  • Cover with weed control fabric and coat generously with gravel.
  • Stir for four hours and what do you get? -- A "Ground Force" transformation !! (guess who was Charlie Dymock? )
  • Stand back and survey the finished product.

......a garden to be proud of, thanks to PK Rotary Community Service team.

The Wine

Well its been bottled, some 250 in total and a taster is on its way for all club members. An interesting flavour. Not quite Grand Cru but not cheap plonk. The methods used were traditional except that feet played no part in the juice extraction - it would have meant changing our socks. But hand squeezed it was. Untouched by chemical additions it was left to ferment in tubs before racking into large carboys to mature. The whole exercise was fun, educational and worthy of an honourable mention in Chatters.

Convenors Reports

SPORTS EXTRA. ( Read all About it ) March 2008 Edition. FROM SPORTS CONVENOR. GEORGE DELGATY.

CURLING. SCOTTISH ROTARY CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Otherwise known as the “RAMSHEAD” because that is what the Curling Trophy is, a Jewel encrusted Ramshead which is really a Giant Snuffbox. This year our Club’s Curlers put up a Great Show to try and win the aforementioned “Ramshead” for 2008 and thereby qualify for the Rotary World Curling Championships to be held in Perth in 2010 (27th March – 2nd April).
Curling Team

After Qualifying we then headed into the round-robin stages for our District which meant games against Perth St. Johns, Stirling and Perth. Having won all of these games we had qualified for the “Ramshead Finals” which again is a round-robin affair with the best two Teams after three games contesting the final. Our team was Colin Moreland (Skip), George Delgaty (Third), Kevin Fearn (Second) and Willie Monks (Lead).

We knew before we played our first couple of games on 4th March that if we could manage two wins we should be in the Final. Our strategy worked, after hard earned victories over Forfar (the current holders) 5 shots to 3 and then in the afternoon, Lockerbie by 6 shots to 3 against Matt Murdoch, whose son is the current Scottish Champion Curler, David Murdoch. According to Matt, David gets his Curling prowess from his Father. Thus we moved on to the second Tuesday the 11th March and our team had to alter as Colin had booked a caribbean cruise and had left for sunnier climes the previous Thursday. Ian Stevenson joined the Squad and came in at Lead. This meant that Willie moved to Second and Kevin was elected Skip. We had to play the Stranraer Club in the morning and had a resounding win over them, thanks to a spectacular shot from Kevin which resulted in us scoring six shots mid way through the game. This was followed by scoring three shots in the next two ends to end the Stranraer challenge. On speaking to their 3rd player, Ian McIntyre it transpired that thirty years ago he had been a pupil at Strathallan School and guess who was his history teacher? - None other than our own Nick du Boulay, a small world indeed! So we were all set for the final against Lockerbie, who we have a pretty good record against but we were wary of the wily Matt Murdoch a very good tactician. After the first two ends we led by 2 shots to 1. However the Game went in Lockerbie’s favour over the next two ends with them scoring a three and then a two against the head. This left us with a mountain to climb being 6-2 down with four ends of the game left. However we battled on and won single shots in ends 5,6 and 7 ends to trail 5-6 going into the last end where we were looking to steal either one shot to force an extra end or possibly two for the game. played the end really well and when Matt Murdoch came to play his last stone he was facing three shots against him. He had to play a very good draw shot to lose only a one. Into the extra end and again as Kevin had stated earlier we were “bossing” the game and after I had played my two stones we lay two shots. The Lockerbie third player, Roger managed to take one stone out but we still lay shot in the middle of the house. We needed a good guard shot to make it very difficult for Matt, however Kevin’s first stone came into the house leaving us with two shots. Matt played a good shot to move one stone and lie shot partly guarded. Kevin’s final shot looked good but we were trying to get his stone partially hidden and he just clipped a front stone, therefore end of a great game.

In conclusion I think the Club can be proud of its Curlers, Colin,Kevin, George, Willie and Ian for going eight games undeafeated and when all looked lost in the Final we came back with a battling performance which nearly came off. I think I can safely say Perth Kinnoull Rotary Curlers are held in high regard by the rest of the Scottish Rotary Curlers after this year’s Ramshead.

OFF TO CANADA……………..In my last Sports Extra I advised you that Rotarians, Colin Moreland, George Delgaty and Ian Stevenson along with Perth St. John’s Rotarian, Stuart Cameron, Ann Delgaty and Myra Stevenson were setting off to the Rotary World Curling Championships in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. We fly out on Friday 28th March via Amsterdam with KLM to Toronto where we will be met by a Rotarian, John Garton who I have hosted in Scotland. We are all staying at his and his wife, Sue’s house on Friday and Saturday and then he will take us all down to Brantford where the Rotary World Curling will commence on Sunday 30th March.

We have a very extensive programme with the curling sessions starting on Sunday at 3.45pm to be followed by a Cheese & Wine where we will meet the Mayor of Brantford (Willie’s Perth City Plaque will be handed over at that time unless the Perth Club, who are also going, get there before us, assuming they have thought of the idea!) The Curling continues over a further eight games, two a day with session times at 8.00am and 1.00pm or 10.30am and 3.30pm. We alternate with the main championships. Monday night we attend a rotary meeting hosted by Brantford Sunrise at the Golf and Country Club where the curling is being held. Tuesday night is PUB NIGHT with entertainment. Wednesday is Home Hosting night. Thursday is a free evening and Friday night is the closing banquet with live music to the Xstatics (Wow!).

The ladies or companions as the Canadians like to call them, have a "Visitation Programme" while we are curling. Monday they go to a Talking Earth Pottery and Woodland Cultural Centre and also the Mohawk Chapel where if you are not a Believer you are for the CHOP! Tuesday sees them going into the Mennonite area at St. Jacobs and a visit to a Perfume place- Mary Maxims-Paris. Wednesday a visit to a special school followed by a tour of the home of Alexander Graham Bell, probably have to give them a CALL before they go! Thurs - Curling at Brantford Curling Club- Games and Lunch. So all in all a busy time for the P.K. party.

Ann and I are staying on for a second week and are being hosted by Rotarian Merv and Maryanne Robblee in Ottawa. He has persuaded me to give a talk at his Rotary Club at the unearthly time of 7.00am. I have warned him I will not be at my best at that time in the Morning, but hey ho! the Perth Kinnoull spirit of -- I’ll give it a go -- is within. Apparently the weather in Ottawa is good, I think not, 6ft of Snow in Merv’s Garden. It will just be like Christmas. Now what’s that song, I’m Dreaming of a White EASTER. Hope to catch up with Rotarian, Irene Marsh when we are over.

We will bethinking of you ALL at the Black Dyke Band Concert which I trust the Party of 12 that  I managed to persuade to come down from Dingwall Rotary enjoy it. They are staying in the Royal George. > >
