PRESIDENT'S CHAT

John

Some of you will remember “That Was the Week that Was” the satirical and topical television programme and then again our younger members will not. Well so far as being President of the Club is concerned it is more like “That Was the Year that Was.”

From my perspective it has been a good Rotary Year. I can say that I have enjoyed the priviledge of being Club President. There have been many, highlights in the year and many opportunities for service and fellowship thanks to the commitment of the Office Bearers, the Conveners supported by their respective Committees and Council members.

What will I remember most? – certainly the numerous events but most of all the fellowship and the fun.

I would thank Lorna, Eddie and their staff for the excellent service received throughout the year.

The President’s role is an enjoyable one when there is such participation and enthusiasm in the membership. Our new members bring most welcome talents, energies and experience to the Club. I am sure that the Club will go from strength to strength.

So for me “That was the Year that Was”. I now look forward to being Sergeant-at-Arms for a year – be on your best behaviour; and even if you are you will probably still get fined.

I wish Harry, his team and all Club members all the very best for a very successful and enjoyable  Rotary Year in 2008/2009 .

Kind Regards,

President John

Editorial

It's been a month for giving. Cheques everywhere! Our coverage in the local press has also been good so you will have seen some of the Chatters' photos before, but not in such detail! If anyone would like to have a higher resolution copy of any picture let me know.

Spectacles

The spec hunting season is underway! All club members are encouraged to ask their friends or business colleagues to donate any unwanted spectacles or to search wider afield by asking for donations from other sources, such as their own opticians. Donations, which go to Vision Aid Overseas will be accepted until mid-July 2008.

Nick, Helen and Greg started the ball rolling with a photo call for the P.A.

What our members do apart from Rotary--

Eva was doing a spot of moonlighting at the Farmer's Market. Very ably displaying her considerable skill as chef and presenter, she treated the audience to  tasting of pan-seared roast duck in a red wine sauce with rosemary and garlic flavoured potatoes.  A nice lunchtime surprise. -- Eva, you get 5 stars  !

Cheque handover
May 20th Cheque Presentation to Sightsavers International
- With due ceremony, the proceeds of the musical / social evening held in February were presented to Hilary Paton of Sightsavers International. Hilary also gave us a talk on the work of Sightsavers and the problems of preventable blindness, particularly in India and Africa and an insight into what can be done with even a small contribution to save someone's vision. The donation from our Club will go to a Rotary sponsored hospital in Andhrar Pradesh in Southern India.

The dinner that evening was also innovative in that we all sat around one table. An arrangement that well suited Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms, Frank. He had a long list of fines !

What a productive club we are! To prove it two cheques were presented, one to Marissa, a young skater (Scottish Junior Champion. no less!) with high hopes for the future; and the second to the Macmillan Cancer Support Perth Appeal for the new Palliative Care Unit at PRI.

Sarah - the winner

It was a normal Club meeting but with an added bonus, the final of the X-Factor singing competition. The venue - the Gannochy Room at the Dewars Rinks -- a fitting location for an enjoyable evening of song performed by students from Perth College.

Six contestants in all, but only one winner who received a cheque for £250 from President John on our behalf. The jury took their time to reach a decision but lucky we were not left out in the cold as Mary MacInroy, accompanied by Peter Honeyman, sang some very good jazz numbers to keep us quiet. They succeeded well!

Two other items on the 10th June were firstly the presentation of the Quaich to Michael who was the winner in the Perth-Kinnoull Annual Stroke Play golf competition and secondly a cheque for £250 was presented to (Councillor) Bob Ellis, Chair  of the Perth & Kinross Sports Council for support of the forthcoming mini-Olympics.

Ways and Means

Preparations are in place to raise funds at the summer fete on the 14th June. A stall has been hired and Greg is organising fundraising fun for the day. We will be having a one arm bandit, a human one! All Rotarians are asked to participate and to sign up for a slot, either as the bandit or as a 'fruit picker' The chance of a lifetime! We are also looking for 'kiddies' prizes and maybe a few adult ones. Word on the street is that the new 'pound' shop in the high street has kiddies cuddly toys for a pound, yes please!!
