GAVEL COMPETITION.

Well we have successfully completed our 3 Friendly Gavel games in our Section, with first up a draw at Dundee Campderdown who hosted us at their regular meeting at the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee.

Frank kindly agreed to report on the event for Chatters. - Click here to read Frank's report!

Our next two fixtures were at Home and were played after our normal Tuesday Club Meeting on 10th and 17th October against Dundee and Blairgowrie Rotary Clubs.

The games played against Dundee were Putting, Indoor Boules / Petanque, Whist and Farkel ( a Dice game which was down to pure Lady Luck). It was neck and neck after Rounds 1 & 2 but the P.K. Gavellers “did the business” as they say in football parlance in Round 3 winning all four games to set up a final score of 20 points to 12 in our favour. A good night of fellowship was had with the Dundee Rotarians, who have featured quite a few times in the Gavel Final, who will ever forget the Gavel Final we hosted and the game Michael Thomson concocted as the very final game, the Egg Race. Dundee certainly hadn’t. Our Team was Nick and Harry, myself and President Amanda ( with Michael taking over from Amanda after Round 1), Colin and Bob and John Shedden and Gillian.

Our last section game was again another enjoyable night against Blairgowrie, who all joined us for the meal and who all commented on that they had enjoyed our Speaker for that evening and of his trials and tribulations in Zimbabwe. Again it was fairly close 12-11 to P.K. going into the Final round and again coining a footballing term “the Boys done good” in Round 4 winning 6-2 for a total score of 18 to 13.

Fellowship was once again to the fore and this time our Team were Nick & Frank, Ian Stevenson & John Cormack, Colin and, making his debut, ( Your Chatters Editor) Gordon, who said afterwards that he had really enjoyed the experience and finally “old gavel hands” Michael & John Steven.

We await news from District Gavel Officer, Bobby Watson who will be our opponents in the next round which will be a straight knockout.

GOLF LADDER / KNOCKOUT COMPETITION.

The Semi-finals have both been played with “Wily “ Willie Monks getting the better of the Holder of the Trophy, “Leftie” Harry Cooper at Murrayshall while “Meticulous” Michael Thomson reached the Final by defeating “Bandit” Kevin Fearn. The Final I gather is being played at Dunkeld & Birnam Golf Club on Wednesday morning 25th October. Well done to everyone that played and especially for concluding this Golf Competition in record time.

CURLING.

We did not get off to the best of starts in defence of our Perthshire Rotary League title. With only 3 players, Colin, George and Kevin able to play we had to give away a 6 shot Penalty to our opponents, Kinross. We fought hard but went down 7-8. Our next game is on Monday 30 th October when our Team will be Colin, Bob, Willie and Myra Stevenson, who is allowed to play for Ian under the rules of the competition. This is against Dunblane at 8.15pm.

We are also looking forward in November to the visit of the Canadian Rotary Curling Team who play in Perth on Wednesday 8th November and again at Pitlochry on 9th November. Curling times are 3pm Perth and 2pm at Pitlochry. On this occasion 4 P.K. Rotarians are hosting Canadian Curlers from Woodstock- Oxford, Meaford, Simcoe and West Ottawa Rotary Clubs, all based in Ontario. George is hosting the Tour Treasurer, John Garton with whom he stayed on the Scotland Tour to Canada in 2004. Colin hosts Steve Blondeau, who also hosted George in 2004. Willie hosts Wayne Green from Simcoe and Ian Stevenson hosts Wayne Kipp from Meaford, the Apple growing area near Georgian Bay. Also involved in the Curling at Perth are Rotarians, Kevin Fearn and Bob Reid and they have been invited to the Evening Shenanigans at Noah’s ark when we will be BBC ing that is BOWLING, BEER, CANADIANS- what a mixture- should be a good night. Look out for the Report in next month’s Sports Extra in Chatters.

………….AND FINALLY as announced recently at Rotary we have a Team of George, Colin, Kevin and Willie plus alternate Bob competing in the Scottish Rotary Curling Championships 2006/07 at Dewar's rinks on Sunday 19th November at 11.15am and 4pm and if successful i.e that we make the top 4 teams after the days play, we would then go forward to play in the Round Robin on Sunday 3rd December at 11.15am and 4pm and Sunday 14th January 2007 at 4pm. We won this Competition in 2004 to represent Scotland at the Rotary World Curling Championships in Lockerbie earlier this year. This time around our aim is to win the “Ramshead” and represent Scotland again at Brantford, Ontario, Canada in the rotary Worlds in 2008. Now that would be something to report about for Sports Extra. WATCH THIS SPACE!
