CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT.
WEDNESDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER.
AT DUNKELD & BIRNAM GOLF CLUB.
Our first ever Golf “Shotgun Start” Team Tournament went with a BANG. The weather was glorious, the Course and especially the Greens were in fine order. Thanks to Willie Monks for assisting me in the first job of the day, erecting the Sponsor Hole Banners and Tee markers before 12.45pm - we certainly earned our Coffee and Bacon Roll.
When we arrived back at the Clubhouse, Michael Thomson, Ian E. Brown and Harry Cooper were in full swing at the Registration Desk. After everyone was registered and aware of their Starting Hole and the Scoring ( more about that later), I announced for everyone to be ready to go to their Starting Hole from 1.30pm and to be ready for the “Gun” at 2.00pm. Douglas Barr was our man with the Gun as well as assisting with transporting Golfers to the lower end of the Course, whilst the Green keeping staff assisted those in the first half of the Course.
Rotarians, Janet Simpson and Bill Smith were on duty at Challenge Hole No.3. “Hit the Green” and win a sleeve of 3 golf balls on payment of entry fee of £2.50 per golfer. A similar payment on Hole No.6 where John Steven and Gordon Whitcomb were in charge of “Driving the Green” for a Golf Shirt.
Vice President, John Shedden cast his eagle eye over Hole No.9 “Nearest the White Line” and Douglas Barr occupied a nice seat between the 11th green and 12th Tee to record Golfer’s who had an “Osprey Birdie-Magic 2” at the 11th. Iain Smith was in charge of “Nearest the Pin”at No.18 the hole the Team “Anchor Counselling Services” started at and who I was playing for. This was in the excellent company of Junior Vice President, Harry Cooper and his guests Mike Massey and Kevin Jefferson.
My highlight on the Golfing front was on hole No.3. I hit the Green, approx. 3ft from the Pin and received my sleeve of golf balls and a Kiss from Rotarian Janet Simpson!
The Teams had been supplied with Goodie bags which were most welcome around your own 8th/9th hole and on returning to the Clubhouse we thought our Team had done quite well and had given it our best Shot.
A lovely Buffet was served to everyone by the Catering Staff and the lady members of Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club.
As Vice Pres. John Shedden is shortly to retire from his hectic job with NHS he has now found his niche as a “Wine waiter” as Rotarians looked after our Guests whilst the “Backroom Boys” at Registration feverishly tried to find a winner of the Team Ball and Team Competitions. This area will be thoroughly investigated for next year, in order to try and speed up the process and to make the scoring easier for the Teams.
By this time President Amanda Millar had joined us for the Buffet and to assist with our Prize Draw and Auction . Although we only had 16 teams and the format had been changed from previous years to a “Shotgun Start” over a new Course, everyone felt that it was great. The Company were altogether at the end of the day to hear the winners of the various Challenge Holes and Team Prizes. These are shown in the following table.

Hall. This raised £320 the Prize Draw £600 and Challenge Holes £210. All told we should raise well over £2000 once all outstanding funds are in.
The Winners of the “SCOTTISH GRASS MACHINERY” Team Ball prize were Flash Bang Wallop captained by ex Kinnoull Rotarian, David Morris with Jim Muir, Jackie Coburn and John Stiell.

We have already sent thank you letters and to note in their Diaries next year’s date WEDNESDAY 5th SEPTEMBER 2007 at Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club, when we trust the number of Teams will grow from 16 to 20.
