Update From Young Sportsperson Rory McClellan

A further update from the father of one of the young athletes we sponsored this year via SportsScotland to our Rotarian Ken Thompson. Rory McClellan, who is a competitive fencer:

Hi Ken

I hope all is well with you and yours.

The big event of Rory's season was the Commonwealth Championships, held in London in August.

Fencing has not been part of the Commonwealth Games for some time: it remains an optional sport but the organisers of the Birmingham games decided not to include it again.

The Commonwealth Fencing Federation organises their championships in the same country as the Games each time, and the medals carry the Commonwealth Games logo - and Rory managed to take medals home!

He won bronze in the senior individual men's sabre, and was part of the Scotland team that won silver in the senior men's team event. He was also eligible for the Junior events (under 20) and was prominent in the Scotland team that took bronze. A quarter-final placing in the Junior individual event was the only one where he didn't secure a medal. But not a bad return from the Championships.

We would like to thank you again for the Club's support for Rory. It made a real contribution to those medals!

Best regards

Steve McClellan
